Function
The purpose of electromagnetically operated brakes is to either set the position of an inactive weight (holding brake) or bring a moving load to a stop and hold it (working brake). In high-frequency applications, the brake’s activation (closing or opening) typically has to occur in a split second to brake loads rapidly and safely.
In addition to integrated solutions, electric motors are the primary application for electromagnetic brakes. Applications include wind power, industrial vehicles, robotics, AGVs, geared and servo motors, medical technologies, and many more. Either permanent magnet brakes or spring-applied brakes are utilised, depending on the application.
Advantages
The merits of Kendrion Binder’s spring-applied brakes are their high torques, wear resistance, and allowable braking energies. They are perfect for use in servo and geared motors, robotics and automation, lifts, hoists, wind turbines, conveyor systems, medical technologies, and many more applications since they provide a variety of integration and installation possibilities. Apart from ordinary catalogue brakes, Kendrion provides brake solutions tailored to the needs of its clients and assists them in choosing an appropriate braking solution.
Kendrion permanent magnet brakes impress with their longevity, accuracy, and great power density. They are ideal for usage in non-motor applications as well as servo motors, robotics, automation, wind turbines, and medical technologies. In addition to providing bespoke braking systems and off-the-shelf catalogue brakes, Kendrion also assists clients in choosing the best brake option.

Lenze Brakes With A Spring Application
Lenze brakes that are spring-applied and have an electromagnetic release are used to controllably stop or quickly slow down moving objects.
The braking force is produced by compression springs, thus even in the case of a mains failure, the friction-generated torque is still usable.
Moving masses may be swiftly slowed down or accelerated with the application of electromagnetic clutches and brakes. They can also be purchased as a single-housing clutch/brake combo device. The cyclical manufacturing processes are the main applications for these combinations. Friction under voltage and during a dry run produces the torque. After being turned off, the lock ring ensures that there is no leftover torque.
When a mass in motion has to be stopped as quickly as feasible or needs to be held in place in a certain way, electromagnetically released spring-applied brakes are utilised. Compression springs are used to apply the stopping force. Therefore, in the case of a mains failure, the braking torque produced by a friction fit is also accessible in a deenergised condition. The electromagnetic brake is released by applying a spring.
The Lenze brake is a spring-applied brake that releases electrically. The rotor, or rotating brake disc, has friction linings on both sides. It is tensioned between the armature plate and a counter-friction face in a de-energised condition by a braking normal force that is applied by compression springs.
The friction linings made without asbestos provide consistent braking torque and little wear. Apart from the typical high-performance friction lining, there are specialised friction linings available for certain application areas, such as those with higher friction factor or high resistance to wear.
The armature plate is electromagnetically raised from the rotor to release the brake (release). The rotor may rotate freely because it is axially displaced, relieving it of the spring pressure.
