New Zealand bowlers have found it increasingly difficult to secure wickets with batters taking advantage of New Zealand bowlers’ ineffectiveness against explosive batsmen like Quinton de Kock who has scored yet another century, drawing ever closer to Rohit Sharma’s record score.
South Africa has fallen well short in this Test match against a New Zealand squad that features eight uncapped players – including first-time captain Neil Brand – including first-choice bowlers who have chosen to participate in domestic T20 tournaments instead.
Quinton de Kock
Quinton de Kock is one of South Africa’s most promising young cricketers. Once thought to become one of Test cricket’s greats, de Kock has struggled since taking up bat and ball for himself in 2012. De Kock attended King Edward VII High School alongside former teammates Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie before making his ODI debut against Zimbabwe as a replacement for AB de Villiers in February 2014.
His performances in the shorter format earned De Kock selection to South Africa’s squad for the 2018 Cricket World Cup, where he became regular opener and hit back-to-back sixes while opening with Hashim Amla and scored three centuries.
South Africa will rely heavily on him this season as he continues his solid form. Additionally, he’s proven himself an effective fielder; taking three wickets against New Zealand in their opening innings alone! Rassie van der Dussen helped propel South Africa’s total of 357-4. Keshav Maharaj, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee shared the remaining New Zealand wickets between them.
Rassie van der Dussen
South Africa A and West Indies A are set to kick-off their second unofficial Test match at Buffalo Park in East London today, providing another crucial chance for fringe players who hope to secure spots in New Zealand early next year – Keegan Petersen and Tony de Zorzi are currently competing against Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi for those limited spots available in their squads.
Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock both batted magnificent centuries to help the Proteas post 357-4 after batting first against New Zealand at Pune’s MCA Stadium on Friday in their World Cup opener. These heroic performances helped overcome any initial deficit caused by Temba Bavuma being injured early on their innings; yet New Zealand were limited to scoring only 167 runs as an answer.
Proteas won with ease to complete a 12-4 record in the tournament and remain within two wins of qualifying for a semi-final berth with two games left to play. Glenn Phillips scored 60 runs while Will Young (33) and Daryl Mitchell (24) were the only Kiwi batsmen to reach double figures; David Miller then struck an astonishing 53 off 30 balls, hitting four sixes as his side easily chased down their target; defeat for New Zealand also forced them down into fourth position in the table.
Tim Southee
Southee may not be one of the fastest bowlers, but has proven himself as a reliable performer for New Zealand. He boasts an impressive record in one-day international cricket and will look to add even more glory here. Additionally, Southee will hope to showcase his skill with both bat and ball.
Southee will hope to make his Test debut against New Zealand as soon as possible, having had great form with Northern Districts. Being the sole specialist pacer within their squad makes him an exciting prospect with great promise in Southee’s career ahead.
New Zealand batsmen are performing impressively as they pursue an enormous total. Quinton de Kock has neared his fourth century while Rassie van der Dussen has hit several SIXES. These duos have formed strong partnerships as they guide their team to an impressive score.
So far, the bowlers have done an outstanding job of restricting batters’ space to hit big shots. Trent Boult has been especially economical while Keshav Maharaj, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee all took wickets as well as taking care in fielding duties despite some dropped catches – something they must improve upon if they wish to win this match.
Trent Boult
South Africa boasts a strong batting lineup led by explosive talents like Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram, while their bowling unit, led by Kagiso Rabada, can quickly turn games around at crucial junctures. Unfortunately, however, South Africa sometimes struggle to maintain momentum throughout matches which makes their clash with New Zealand even more fascinating.
Trent Boult has quickly established himself as one of the premier bowlers in international cricket due to his speed and his ability to exploit any weaknesses. Recently he took seven wickets off Papua New Guinea’s bowling attack against them for an impressive seven wicket haul and was named player of the match award recipient.
Pacer Andrew McCullum has been bowling superbly, bowling at Yorker length and restricting batsmen’s movement. He already managed two wickets in the first innings and hopes for more in this innings.
Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma had an outstanding opening partnership. De Kock punished Henry for going too full in the third over and lifted him over the fence for six in the fifth. Unfortunately, Tim Southee eventually struck with his quality New Zealand attack, dismissing De Kock in turn, with all South African batsman struggling against this powerful attack. Hopefully David Miller can come onto the crease to increase SA’s score when he joins up; both men must quickly form another 150+ partnership and keep pushing ahead if possible to maintain momentum before losing momentum.
