How is carbon steel different from other steel forms?

There are many types of steel, and all of them have different properties and characteristics. One of the leading steel types that is highly demanded in the market and very durable is carbon steel. This is well in demand because of the highest input of the material, and when it is associated with other components, it is referred to as alloy steel. 

 

Steel manufacturers in India have developed this carbon steel with a high carbon content and vast mechanical properties. Carbon steel has much higher strength, wear and tear resistance, and hardness than other steel forms. These properties are due to the increased amount of carbon content, which makes the steel stronger and more durable.

 

What are the forms of carbon steel, and what are their uses? 

 

  1. Low carbon: This form of carbon steel is also known as mild steel, and if the value is compared, then it is also considered the cheapest of all. Its cheap characteristic does not make it a less valuable type than the others. Along with containing excellent properties, it is also highly flexible. This makes moulding it into components an easy task.

 

The carbon steel is used to prepare different forms of sheets, screws and some reinforcement bars. With the lowest carbon content of all, it can still hold out against heavy pressure. The steel manufacturers in India carburized the carbon steel’s surface to make it harder and more durable, which makes it highly resistant to abrasion. Low carbon or mild steel is also used in domestic appliances, shipbuilding, fabrication or panelling.

 

  1. Medium Carbon: The medium carbon steel has a higher carbon content than the mild steel. It may not be as flexible as mild steel, but its strength and wear resistance make it an ideal choice in the market. The alloys included in medium carbon steel are chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. The medium carbon can also be hardened by heating it to a specific temperature. This form of carbon steel is used to make axles, shafts, rails, and water appliances.

 

  1. High Carbon: The strongest carbon steel among all the types is high carbon steel. It contains the highest amount of carbon in a steel type. Some other constituents, like magnesium or chromium, are added before they are transported by the carbon steel distributors in India. The heating of carbon steel with these elements makes the high-carbon steel more hardened and free of corrosion. It must be kept in mind that the excess heating can make the steel brittle, which leads to cracking even due to a low amount of pressure. High carbon steel is used to make wires with high strength, punches, blades, and cutting tools.

 

What factors differentiates carbon and stainless steel?

 

  • The major element that separates the two steel types is their capability to be corrosion-resistant. Both carbon and stainless steel have iron oxide in them, which increases the occurrence of rust. The high chromium percentage in the stainless steel makes it more resistant to rusting.

 

  • The carbon steel distributors in India have analysed that carbon steel is highly tensile than stainless steel because of the low carbon content in the stainless. Along with this, carbon steel is less costly than stainless steel because of its carbon and iron elements. The reason for the high cost of stainless steel is that it consists of chromium, nickel or manganese.

Manufacturing carbon steel has become a more preferred option in the recent market than other steel types. There are multiple carbon steel forms, such as low, medium, or high. All of the carbon steel types can increase their hardness or strength just by heating or mixing alloys in them. It is better than stainless steel because of its low cost and high tensile strength.
